The Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) applies a 2.8% Cost-of-Living Adjustment (COLA) for 2026. This increase helps your benefits keep pace with inflation and arrives sooner than you might expect.
Why Do VA Disability Payments Increase in 2026?
The VA matches its annual COLA to Social Security adjustments. Inflation data drives this change. Veterans see the 2.8% rise effective December 1, 2025 Current Veterans disability compensation rates.
- Most veterans receive their first increased payment on December 31, 2025 (for December benefits, advanced due to the New Year’s Day holiday on January 1, 2026).
- On average, this adds about $107 per month for 100% rated veterans (no dependents).
- Higher ratings or dependents bring bigger increases.
Check the full 2026 VA Disability Pay Charts on the VA site for exact amounts by rating and family status.
When Will You See the 2026 Increase in Your Account?
VA payments arrive on the first business day of the month for the prior month’s benefits. Holiday adjustments apply:
- December 2025 benefits (with 2026 rates): Paid December 31, 2025 (advanced for the January 1 holiday).

Good News: The Increase Applies Automatically to Multiple Benefits need to take no action.
The VA updates several benefits automatically with the COLA, including:
- Disability Compensation: Core service-connected payments rise by 2.8% VA Compensation Rates. Example: A single veteran at 100% sees an increase to the new 2026 rate starting with the December payment.
- VA Pension: Needs-based benefits for wartime veterans and survivors adjust too Current Pension Rates.
- Dependency and Indemnity Compensation (DIC): Survivor benefits get the boost Current DIC Rates for Survivors.
- Aid and Attendance and Other Special Add-ons: These additional payments also increase automatically.
These updates help you budget better. However, many veterans face denials, low ratings, or appeals—especially with ongoing PACT Act claims for toxic exposure.
