FAQs
Do I qualify for SSDI?
The SSA uses several criteria to determine if you qualify for SSDI. This includes both medical and non-medical criteria.
- Non-medical:
- You must have worked and paid federal payroll taxes (FICA) for five of the last 10 years;
- You must apply before reaching full retirement age (65-67);
- You cannot earn more than the maximum Substantial Gainful Activity (SGA) level for the year
Medical:
- You must meet Social Security’s definition of total disability as your condition relates to the conditions listed in the SSA Blue Book or
- The SSA finds your impairment is considered to “equal a listing” based on the medical evidence you present
How do I apply for Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI)?
You will need to provide information regarding yourself, your family, your employment history, any income you receive, information about physician(s), and any medical condition(s). We will help you through the process and submit your forms on your behalf. We can make sure your application is complete as you are also required to supply documents that verify the information listed in your application.
Statistics show claims that are handled by experienced representatives are more likely to win approval, and Aaria Connect is here to help you file your claim. By engaging with you from the initial stage of this process, we can help you collect and assemble the necessary information to support your claim and avoid common mistakes that always lead to delays or denials.
Why was my initial claim for benefits denied?
When applying for benefits, applications can be denied for a variety of reasons, including:
- You are working above Substantial Gainful Activity (SGA) levels during the application process;
- You do not have a severe impairment that will or has caused issues for at least a year or that will lead to death;
- You did not provide enough medical evidence of a disabling condition;
- A prior application was filed incorrectly;
- You are receiving other benefits that contribute to your income maximum;
- You are not classified as disabled following an assessment using the disability medical-vocational grid rules
If your benefits were denied, we can present your case to the appeals council to help ensure you receive SSDI.
How can I increase my chances of receiving benefits?
The first step is to hire a disability advocate. They will ensure you have the evidence to prove you suffer from a disabling condition. Other steps you can take include:
- Seeking more frequent medical treatment for your condition(s)
- Following all prescribed treatment plans recommended by your healthcare provider
- Keeping a tally of all the physicians you’ve seen over the years and a current list of medications
- Having your own physician(s) complete Residual Function Capacity (RFC) questionnaires on your behalf
- Updating your advocate or the SSA on changes to your medical treatment, or the worsening of your condition
- Understanding when it is time to submit a dire needs letter to expedite your case
How long does it take the Social Security Administration to make a decision once I apply for disability?
Typically 2-4 months.
Timeframes can vary due to:
- The nature of a disability;
- The completion and availability of medical documentation verifying disability
- Need for additional Medical Exams that may be required by the SSA
- Quality review periods
- Appeals
Why should I choose a disability advocate instead of a lawyer?
You should choose a disability advocate instead of a law firm because we are specialists when it comes to getting you the benefits you deserve. It’s all we do. Law firms are focused on fighting cases through the appeals process, while we avoid the appeal process altogether. If you already filed a claim that was denied, we are the better choice to file an appeal, using our specialized questionnaires to ensure we collect the relevant information required to win your case.
